A TECHNOLOGICAL LEAP: THE PORSCHE 964 CARRERA 4

The 1991 Porsche 911 Carrera 4, part of the 964 generation, marks a transformative chapter in the history of Porsche's most iconic model. Introduced in 1989, the 964 generation was tasked with modernizing the 911 without losing its distinct identity. The Carrera 4, in particular, stood out as the first production 911 to feature all-wheel drive, showcasing Porsche’s forward-thinking approach to performance and safety.

A NEW 911 ERA

By the late 1980s, the 911 faced increasing competition and the challenge of evolving automotive regulations. The 964 was Porsche’s response, representing a 85% reengineering of the 911 while maintaining its signature silhouette. The Carrera 4 emphasized innovation, borrowing its all-wheel-drive system from the Porsche 959 supercar, which had dominated the Paris-Dakar Rally.

The Carrera 4's launch was a bold statement. While purists initially hesitated to embrace the idea of an all-wheel-drive 911, the system proved itself, enhancing stability and grip without diluting the car’s characteristic rear-engine dynamics. It also signaled Porsche’s commitment to blending cutting-edge technology with timeless design.

DESIGN: CLASSIC LINES, MODERN DETAILS

The 964 retained the unmistakable profile of the 911 but introduced numerous updates for improved aerodynamics and aesthetics. Integrated bumpers replaced the traditional "impact bumpers," creating a sleeker, more cohesive design. The car also featured a retractable rear spoiler, which deployed at speeds above 80 km/h (50 mph), enhancing both cooling and downforce.

The interior offered a balance between tradition and modernization. Classic elements like the five-gauge dashboard layout were retained, while comfort and convenience were improved with options such as air conditioning, leather upholstery, and a high-quality Blaupunkt sound system. The Carrera 4 also introduced driver aids like ABS, a first for the 911.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

The heart of the 1991 Carrera 4 was the air-cooled 3.6-liter flat-six engine, part of the newly developed M64 family. Producing 250 horsepower and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque, it offered smooth power delivery and a distinctive exhaust note that remains a hallmark of Porsche's flat-six engines. The engine was paired with a 5-speed G50 manual transmission, known for its precise shifts.

The standout feature, however, was the all-wheel-drive system. Using a viscous coupling unit, it distributed power dynamically between the front and rear axles, improving traction in all conditions. This made the Carrera 4 a more versatile 911, equally adept at spirited driving on dry roads and navigating slippery surfaces.

The 964 also benefited from a modern suspension setup. Gone were the torsion bars of earlier models, replaced by coil springs and MacPherson struts up front and semi-trailing arms at the rear. This improved ride comfort and handling, making the car more compliant over uneven roads while retaining its sharp responses.

THIS CHASSIS NUMBER

This Porsche 964 rolled out from the factory in July 1991 with a "Guards Red" over a black leather interior layout. Its current owner, a rally and track driver as well as a passionate Porsche collector, registered the car in Italy in 2018 with a numberplate showing a "964" figure in the middle. Since then, it has been sparingly driven and stored with care in a Porsche official facility in Bergamo, ensuring it remains in its best condition.

The car’s exterior is enhanced by sporty "Cup" mirrors and wheels, giving it a dynamic edge. It shows no signs of rust, though a small stone chip on the front right fender and on the retractable spoiler add a touch of character to its otherwise pristine appearance. Performance-wise, the 964 benefits from tasteful modifications, including adjustable H&R sports suspension, a custom exhaust system, and a free-flow intake system with a modified air filter. These upgrades elevate its driving dynamics while staying true to the car's heritage.

Mechanically speaking, the car is in fine form and requires no extraordinary maintenance. The tires need to be replaced as the car has been barely driven in the last 6 years of ownership. While the odometer reads approximately 10.000 miles, the accuracy of this figure cannot be confirmed. However the very good shape of the entire car, and especially of the interior - let us to think that the mileage shouldn't be that wrong.

In these years, the current owner has carried out the routine maintenance needed and consumable replacements, with detailed documentation available to verify the work. This care and attention reflect the dedication of a passionate custodian who ensured the car remained in top shape, even during its limited use.

DRIVING IMPRESSIONS

Behind the wheel, the Carrera 4 retained the character of a true 911. The steering was direct and communicative, offering a level of feedback few cars of the era could match. The all-wheel-drive system added a layer of security, particularly in poor weather, without feeling intrusive. Enthusiasts appreciated that the car’s rear-engine layout still played a defining role in its dynamics, especially during spirited cornering.

Acceleration was brisk, with the Carrera 4 reaching 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds and achieving a top speed of 260 km/h (162 mph). The flat-six engine provided a thrilling soundtrack, especially in the upper rev range, while the improved suspension delivered confidence-inspiring handling without sacrificing everyday usability.

The Carrera 4 was also praised for its versatility. Unlike earlier 911s, which could feel demanding at low speeds, the 964 was more refined and comfortable, making it a capable grand tourer as well as a track-ready machine.
